WK 8 STUDIO WORK SELF DIRECTED

Today Mona and I booked the studio to play around with the lights and try different techniques we learnt in the studio this week.

Low Key lighting
I used two key lights with the honey comb grid and light gels i placed Mona in the centre both the lights were facing her direction.Using the canon 6D from the technicians room my shutter speed was set to 1/125 sec and ISO 100 just changing the aperture value according to the light metering.

                                    f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 93mm focal length
You can see shadows on her hand, neck and above her nose we used blue and magenta light gels.taken from a low vantage point, this has cool colours.

The images below i batch edited using camera raw i increased the vibrance, contrast slider using the same techniques with the two fill lights and light gels.

f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 100mm focal length
f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 93mm focal length
f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 93mm focal length

f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 100mm focal length
f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 100mm focal length
                                      f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 105mm focal length
                                          f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 105mm focal length
                                          f/8.0, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 50mm focal length

Using two key lights with a honey comb grid i placed my Mona in the centre the lights were facing her.Theres shadow from her left side of her face because the key light on the left had a low light metering and because Mona was facing to the right key light.I thought this would be high key lighting but theres defined shadows on monas face and arm.

   f/4, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 60mm focal length
                                            f/4, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 60mm focal length
                                         f/4, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 60mm focal length
The images below i stood infront of the of the light just to change my vantage point.
                                         f/5.6, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 88mm focal length
                                     f/5.6, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 88mm focal length
                               f/5.6, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 88mm focal length

The images below are low key lighting using one key light with the honey comb grid.Theirs nore shadow on Monas left side of her body because the i placed the key light on the right side facing her.
f/8, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 80mm focal length
                                       f/8, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 80mm focal length
Instead of bright on one side and dark on the other, the bright side transitions into a dark tone which then transitions further into a darker tone. I like the richness of the multiple tones. I also like that the fill shadow is falling the same direction as the key.

The images below i used a black styrofoam reflector placed behind mona the purpose of the black side is to not allow any light to pass through you can see shadows on both sides, under her neck and arms.I placed the fill light infront of Mona to get this effect, this would be probably low key lighting.I can also see shadow from her hair on the right side of her face.i like the colours it has complimentary colours from her blue shorts and the gold/yellow from the jacket. The shutter speed was set to 125 sec thats why i was able to freeze the jackets movement. This was taken from a straight forward vantage point.I batch edited the images using camera raw i increased the vibrance slider to bring out the wonderful colours.
                                          f/6.3, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 65mm focal length
                                       f/6.3, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 65mm focal length
                              f/6.3, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 65mm focal length
                                        f/6.3, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 80mm focal length

                                      f/6.3, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 80mm focal length

The image below was shot with the only key light and fill lights. Notice that the background had become grey and that the soft, no bright lines of light on each side of the Monas face. It’s still a nice shot. But it’s not a high-key portrait this would be low key lighting.taken from a straight forward vantage point. You can see shadows under her hat and neck.

 f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 47mm focal length

                                          f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 47mm focal length

                                           f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 47mm focal length

Using the same techniques i used above,i placed Mona on a white box taking this images from a low vantage point.

                                     f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 55mm focal length
                                         f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 55mm focal length
                                    f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 55mm focal length
                                 f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 55mm focal length
                                           f/9, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 65mm focal length
                                     f/8, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 96mm focal length
                                   f/8, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 96mm focal length

For me a high key shot is a normal lit shot against a white background.I will need to adjust the lighting and camera settings so that it won't turn out middle-gray. For low key, i will need to go down a stop or two in lighting. For high-key, go up.As you can see in my studio work i used low key lighting more than high key because i like the dark shadows and tones, for me it’s a feeling of the shot and a personal opinion. I really enjoyed our short photoshoot i had fun but at the same time i learnt alot just by using different lights and diffusers.Gaining the confidence to direct my model my aim was to try and get Mona relaxed trying poses before i grabbed the camera. Also,i told her what outfits will suit different poses i played music just to keep the mood upbeat.
