WK 6 CAMERA USE:FLASH,DIRECT,REFLECTED,DIFFUSED

In class exercise

shutter speed: affects ambient light but not flash

aperture: affects both ambient and flash, as well as changing depth of field

ISO: affects both ambient and flash, doesn't change depth of field, may affect noise

Under exposed background
I had to take a portrait with an underexposed background
                                   f/11,shutter 1/200sec, ISO 100, 33mm focal length
The background is underexposed using camera raw i decreased the exposure, whites, highlights and clarity,i increased the contrast and blacks.Mata was not standing in direct sunlight using the rule of thirds i placed Mata on the right side in the horizontal line and using a wide depth of field to see the background the benches are leading lines with patterns.

fill in flash
I used the canon speedlite to fill in shadows during the day using direct ambient lighting. The following F stops were used.

   f/22,shutter 1/200sec, ISO 100, 51mm focal length
                                          f/11,shutter 1/200sec, ISO 100, 55mm focal length
                                             f/5.6,shutter 1/200sec, ISO 100, 55mm focal length
As seen here higher the aperture value the image gets underexposed and the lower the aperture value image becomes more brighter. The best result was f/11.

Bounce Flash
Below are portraits of Mata using bounce flash.
                                           f/5.6,shutter 1/100sec, ISO 200, 18mm focal length
The flash was pointed at a wall using, you can shadow behind Mata, taken from a high vantage point the wall makes the image have a warm tone to it.As you can see here the both walls are been bright, using camera raw i increased the exposure, contrast and clarity.I used the lens correction and cropping tool.i removed the brown shelf on the right using the healing brush.

                                                 f/5.6,shutter 1/100sec, ISO 200, 18mm focal length
This image i pointed the flash to the right,Mona was holding the gold reflector on the right, their is more light on the right side and less on the left side.Using camera raw i cropped used lens correction increased exposure, contrast, clarity and vibrance,i also decreased the highlights. This was shot at a low vantage point.

                                            f/5.6,shutter 1/100sec, ISO 200, 18mm focal length
In this image i pointed the flash straight forward more to the centre of the wall thats why its more bright you can see shadows in the image. In camera raw i increased the exposure, vibrance, clarity and highlights, using the lens correction and under manual i enabled the auto straightened.

Diffused flash using half moon
below is a still life using the Gary Fong half moon to diffuse the flash using a medium shutter speed,i i used a faster shutter speed for this activity because i forgot to change my shutter priority.
                                   f/9,shutter 1/200sec, ISO 200, 48mm focal length
You cant see any flash reflection in the image, its has complimentary colours with the green and orange theres texture on the fan and leading lines inbetween the gaps of the bench.

                                               f/5.6,shutter 1/100sec, ISO 200, 48mm focal length
This was taken without the diffuser you can see the flash reflection on the bucket, the image is abit underexposed compared to the first image.

flash and Blur
We went to the studio to photograph a moving subject using flash and blur technique.Using a slow shutter speed. My camera was set to rear sync flash.

                                f/5.6,shutter 1/1.6sec, ISO 100, 35mm focal length
This is the beautiful Natalie you can see her movements to get this effect, when the flash fires it illuminates and properly exposing the subject. A flash will fire for an extremely short amount of time, freezing the position of the subject. After the flash fires, the shutter remains open and subjects move out. The ambient light keeps coming in, even through the areas where the subjects used to be. The shutter then closes.
                                                 f/5.6,shutter 1/1.6sec, ISO 100, 39mm focal length

Fill in Flash
I had to take a photo using the canon speedlite to fill in shadows during the day.Direct ambient lighting was used. This was shot in the afternoon around 4pm the sun was still out using a straight forward vantage point to capture the images.i was suppose to use the following f stops: f3.5 (my camera did not have that value) ,f5.6 the image came out blurry so i only shot with f11 and f22 because it turned out successful.I noticed higher the aperture value the image gets underexposed and the lower the aperture value image becomes more brighter. The best result was f/11.

                                  f/11,shutter 1/160sec, ISO 100, 39mm focal length
In camera raw i used lens correction and cropped the image,i also increased the clarity.

                                 f/22,shutter 1/160sec, ISO 100, 39mm focal length

the image i took which didnt turn out well
                                           f/5.6,shutter 1/160sec, ISO 100, 39mm focal length

Bounce flash
Bounce flash is when, rather than firing your flashgun pointing directly at your subject, you point it elsewhere typically up or at an angle, bouncing off a wall or ceiling. The objective is to “bounce” light to soften it before it hits your subject.
I had to photograph a portrait using bounce flash with a shutter speed of 1/125 with the following:
I batch edited the images using the lens correction and auto crop panel.

                                  (image1) f/4,shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 18mm focal length
Image 1 i pointed the flash straight up using a low roof. The light is much softer and you can see that the shadow on his neck is softened.
                                  (image2) f/4,shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 18mm focal length
Image 2 the flash was pointed at a wall in here i pointed it to the right side his face has more light on his right side. The result is a nice soft light.Theres shadows on the left side of his face.
                                     (image3) f/4,shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 18mm focal length
Image 3,I pointed the flash behind me the image went really underexposed.
                                    (image4) f/4,shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 18mm focal length
Image 4 i used a reflector held higher than the subject.I asked my husband to hold it high on his right hand. His whole face went warm because i used the gold reflector theres now shadows on his face just under his neck and his left side on the wall where his leaning.

Diffused flash using half moon
I did not use the Gary Fong Half moon but i have used it during the class exercise and seen the difference.I used the filter on the canon speedlite to take the following images below.I used the filter on the speedlite below it has more a warm tone to it.Using camera raw i cropped the image and increased the exposure and contrast.
                                        f/4.5,shutter 1/160sec, ISO 100, 33mm focal length

                                f/4.5,shutter 1/160sec, ISO 100, 33mm focal length
This was without the diffuser on the camera the light is more cool.

Flash and blur
You see, with a normal flash photo, the shutter is only open for a fraction of a second, so the flash is firing for most of your exposure.
With a long exposure, your camera's shutter is open for much longer than the flash is firing - perhaps even several seconds. You can choose whether you want to fire the flash at the start or end of the exposure. Firing the flash at the start of the exposure is known as "front curtain" or "1st curtain". Firing it at the end is known as "rear curtain" or "2nd curtain".I had to photograph a moving subject using flash and blur technique using a shutter speed around 1 second,my camera was set to rear sync flash.
The image was taken in the city.Using camera raw i decreased the highlight, using the lens correction and auto cropping. You can see the blur on his face.
                                    f/4.5,shutter 1.3sec, ISO 100, 29mm focal length
Below were my first attempts of flash and blur but it wasnt satisfactory for me to use.

                                        f/4.5,shutter 6.0sec, ISO 100, 18mm focal length
                                                 f/4.5,shutter 6.0sec, ISO 100, 18mm focal length
