WK 8 RIM AND BUTTERFLY LIGHTING
Rim Lighting
The rim light is often set up behind the subject and slightly higher than the other lights. Because this light is facing the camera, it's important that it be completely blocked by the subject or out of the field of view. If not you may get lens flare and lowered contrast. One way to block the light is to position a piece of cardboard (called a gobo) between the light and subject.
The image below the fill light is faced behind the model.
Theirs two lights used here behind the model using a purple and blue gel.
Butterfly Lighting
Butterfly lighting, also known as Paramount lighting, became a staple pattern for the Hollywood photographers of the 1930s. This lighting is characterized by the butterfly-shaped shadow that it casts below the nose. The butterfly pattern can be quite useful for a variety of faces, but is at its best on lean subjects with high and pronounced cheekbones. It is produced by placing the light source above the face (typically 25-70 degrees) and in line with the direction in which the face is pointing.
The fill light would have been used facing above the models face aiming her nose. You can see shadow below her nose under her neck and on both sides of her face highlighting her cheekbones.
Studio exercise
We worked as a group to take the following images.Using the canon 5D from the technicians room.
Butterfly Lighting

We used one key light and the honeycomb grid, placing it above Nats face. With the main light up high, directly in line with the model’s nose so as not to produce any shadows above her nose just shadows under her nose, under her neck and on the sides of her face.Using camera raw i increased the clarity and saturation i also used the spot removal on her her forehead to remove small blemishes.Using the same techniques with images below.
f/16, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 105mm focal length
Using camera raw i increased the blacks, clarity slider. You can see the same effects here.

We positioned the key lightly closer to Mata, removed the modifiers and replaced it with a smaller modifier dish. I like this image because of Matas outfit it has contrasting colours with the red coat and blue shirt shes wearing.Using camera i increased the blacks and vibrance slider. The image is more subtle.
Rim lighting

For the rim lighting we used key and fill lights placed behind Tema and a softbox facing infront of her on her left side on each side of her in order add the shadow and back lighting theirs more light on her right side because shes facing to the right. You can see the rim light on her hair and shoulders.Using camera raw to convert to grayscale.
f/5, shutter 1/125sec, ISO 100, 90mm focal length
We used colour gels blue and magenta you can see rim lighting on Nats hair.Using the same the same techniques with two lights behind Nat to get this effect.Below images are examples or rim lighting.Lighting gel or simply gel, is a transparent colored material that is used in theater, event production, photography, videography and cinematography to color light and for color correction. Modern gels are thin sheets of polycarbonate or polyester, placed in front of a lighting fixture in the path of the beam.
