FINAL IMAGE CAMERA USE AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY 1

This week we had to select our final image to print out and to be hung on monday. The whole process was very challenging because I wasnt one hundred percent sure which image to choose so i went to reshoot again on monday night and hoping to get reassurance from that shoot. This term i was drawn into night photography something im inexperienced with.It has ventured me to move out of my ''comfort zone''.Which was my goal for this term and to also do something different. As there is not a great deal of light available at night I had to be proficient enough to use the available light to its most effective. Night photography can have some amazing effects examining themes like time, magic and surrealism which is what i love about night photography it is when the magic happens.I chose two images just to see how it turned out when printed. Both shot at night.
I have learnt to efficiently analyse the style of low light photography it is necessary to look at all the factors that affects the use of available light – equipment, sources of light and technique.

NIGHT SHADOW

                                           f/7.1 shutter 4.0sec, ISO 100, 20mm focal length

Firstly, i learnt this semester to utilise the proper equipment to maximise the use of light in low light situations when we discussed about shutter speed on week 2.I also learnt that when photographing at night to use a tripod something i always neglect to follow and when i view my images it has camera shake, using a tripod is important especially for creating selective blur with slow shutter speeds both the images i used a tripod and the EF20mm f/2.8 USM lens i borrowed from Ralph. Both the images were shot at mission bay.My first image Night Shadow was inspired by Francesca Stern Woodman we discussed in week 2 aperture, the blurred image as her signature style.I placed the tripod in the centre of the bridge,i changed my AWB to daylight thats why the image has a warm tones.Using a long shutter speed i asked my husband to walk towards the camera thats why hes figure is blurry. This image was taken from a high vantage point, the bridge are the leading lines to the shadow figure and using a wide depth of field to capture the lights at the background. You can also see the structure on the left which gives depth and more story to the image the shadows on the left side of the jetty indicates that their was a street light on the right side you can also see shadows on the bottom right. You can see patterns of the jetty and on the structure on the left, theirs stone texture on the floor of the jetty.Using camera raw i straightened the image using the straightening tool on the basic panel i increased the exposure, contrast, vibrance and blacks,i also decreased the highlights, whites and clarity. Night photography will make you realise the strengths of a DSLR camera, you will see the world in a way that is different from how a human sees it.

 Follow the yellow line

                                     f/7.1 shutter 6.0sec, ISO 100, 20mm focal length
This was my second image i really like the street lights and the light trails created by cars i captured.Using direct lights a tripod to capture this. This was taken using the daylight camera filter.Theirs texture on the left on the cement and yellow markings are the patterns and also leading lines. The street lights are also the leading lines directing your eyes to the far end of the image. This was taken on a straight forward vantage point using a wide depth of field the background is in focus you can see a reflection of the street lights on the water the left side of the image. The image has warm colours from the yellow, red and green.
The image were saved as TIF in camera raw and this was done by using the save image in order to change the settings to TIF with Pearllisa -PRINT. Next, I reopened the image in photoshop, created a canvas and using the following instructions by ticking the relative box, a resolution of 300 with a resizing to 29.7cm.

In order to create a stroke, the prompts requested me to go to edit - stroke and make the following changes:

width - 1cm
Colour - was left at white
Location - centre
Blending - normal
Opacity - 100%
Resize image so that the longest dimension is 29.7cm

In photoshop we created a new canvas:
File-new-create an A3 sized canvas with a resolution of 300pixels/inch
colour profile: Adobe RGB (1998)
Rotate so that it is a landscape orientation
Image-Rotate-90 degree clockwise

I saved the image in the following formats - PSD, Raw with XMP, TIFF and JPEG into my Digital Technology folder on the server.

                                     f/9 shutter 1/60sec, ISO 100, 20mm focal length
Using camera raw to increase the decrease the exposure, highlights, blacks and clarity i also increased the contrast, blacks and vibrance and then in photoshop i cropped the images into equal half and placed it on the white background.
