WK5 Portfolio Research (lighting techniques)

Dave Nitsche In 2002 Dave bought a camera to shoot some family stuffs. One wintry day he decided to go into his basement and try shooting some studio stuff. For the next 3 years all he did, aside from work, was shoot. He’d spend 40-60 hours a week in his basement clicking away. During that time the art world started noticing. He had his first solo show after shooting for only 18 months. Eventually through this process he found his own voice. Shooting human subjects was never his intention. He wanted to find a way to bring out human emotions in inanimate objects. After all these years he is still growing and looking for ways to inject emotion into images.

Dave’s work has been featured in over a hundred magazines world wide (Digital Photo (UK), Popular Photography (US), Unique Image (Taiwan), Digi Photo (Romania), Shutterbug (US), Popular Photography (China), Australian Photographer (AU) magazines to mention just a few), he’s had shows around the globe and is considered a fresh voice in photography. His images are immediately identifiable and in the abundant world of art photography these days, that’s pretty amazing.

Faceless

I chose this artist for lighting techniques that is similar to what i have used,i like the low key lighting he used.He has used a mannequin which is such a brilliant idea and used various objects.Unfortunately for me my background kept showing. In this image one main light would be used placed on the left side as there is more light on the left side of the mannequin,A plain black backdrop.Because the light is on a lower power the amount of light that gets to the back drop will be dramatically reduced. In fact if I started off with the light, subject & backdrop with even spacing in between them, my backdrop would have been under exposed by about eight stops which should stop it from showing up all together.Oh well more practise needed for me in this section of photography.I like how the theme for this series is FACELESS which gives the viewers a clear picture and message what Dave is expressing.Even though its as simple as it seems the lighting has created more drama and feel to the images.I like how the lights are symmetrical half light and half dark.
