WK 6 Digital Technology 2 SILO PARK photography Responses

Auckland Festival Of Photography
Home
Silo 6, Corner of Jellicoe and Beaumont Street, CBD, Auckland
Wednesday 15 June 2016 – Monday 20 June 2016 10:30am – 4:30pm

Curated by Simone Douglas is an exhibition of international photographic artists with a Home theme. Includes Ian Strange, Shan Turner-Carroll, Lin & Lam, Arthur Ou, Anna Carey, Shoufay Derz. What is home? The artists, each connected to the Australasia Pacific Region look at assumptions of home as a given. Questions of where they come from? and, how long have they been here?

For some of the artists, they never came from - they were always here. Home as spirit. Home as land. For others their family was forced away from ancestral homelands and set adrift, hoping to find refuge and acceptance in lands new to them. Home as hope. Photographs of home past carried forward into new homes, reveal photography’s paradoxical relationship with time. Home as return. Many of us within our region draw from multiple bloodlines. Home as heritage.

Photography Responses
Genre:creative, documentation the artist name is Eva Marosy Weide
I am responding to her images this was one of my favourite images i like how the images are out of focus. The quest for tack sharp photos is something most photographers are on the quest for – but sometimes it is a lack of focus can really make a shot what it is. In Eva Weides images you can slightly pick out what the image is about.I guess the idea in which these kinds of shots creates lot of honor to the subject and kindles the viewers thought and creativity to build upon something he/she doesn’t know about.I think Eva Weide is trying to suggest that home is not a fixed experience. Rather home is a shape shifter revealed through time, culture, and politics. For my photography response i took the images on the day we went to the silo. The blurred technique used worked out very well with my work i made sure my lens was not focused which is very ironic for this course because you would want your image to be sharp and focused.

i really like this image it is a bit different as seen here the green leaves are in focus and the sky tower is out of focus which was intentionally done just playing around with my camera that day

This is similar to Hiroshi Sugimotos work
                                           Example of Hiroshi Sugimotos

Hiroshi Sugimoto has two recurring obsessions: history and time. He has described this new body of work as “architecture after the end of the world.” Sugimoto is known for taking years to work on his series of long-exposure photographs on themes ranging from museum dioramas, movie theaters, seascapes, and historical wax figures. The new architectural images run counter to the traditional sense of a photograph as capturing a moment in time.

The architectural icons in his most recent series represent the fifth major theme that Sugimoto has explored in depth. With this series Sugimoto has essentially broken all the rules of architectural photography. Photographing great landmarks of modernist architecture around the world, Sugimoto has deliberately taken the images out of focus and at unusual angles, isolating the recognisable forms. The blurred forms evoke the passage of time, muting the architectural details and leaving the essence of the building; suggestive of the way in which our memories preserve images.

similar/different to the work of the artist? The artists images were more under exposed compared to mine which is somewhat vibrant had alot going on i think my images are more environmental shots compared to Evas work she has definitely captured her thoughts about her home land as you can see which is not tar sealed roads and their is one image of a carriage. While my images has more modern surroundings.

What did you learn from the process and would you use it again in future work? I learnt that having a blurry image isn't always a bad thing. In fact, when it's used in the right place, it can actually make your photos appear better, also the slower the speed you choose the more blur there will be. I will surely use this blurred technique in the future it is very different from  how i take my images this was really interesting and amusing.
Are each of your responses to the Silo visit about home? If so how do your images relate to the idea of home? For Evas response im definitely showcasing the theme 'Home' i think the images of the sky tower has a strong representation of my home Nz,Auckland is home to the iconic 328 metre Sky Tower.

My response
Genre:creative,still life,fine art
I havent found who the artist is but for my response i took this outside my church i like the warmth of the images which i think is similar to each other and the whole rusty grungy look to it which is also similar.the artist had a worn out chair with stunning light concept which i like so i used my in built flash to take this image and edited on bridge.I think the artist is trying to portray what happend to his/her home could be from a natural disaster and what left of it.

My Opinion:Genre:creative,fine art
This was another favourite images i like the ink splatter you can slightly see the images but the artist has captured water reflections you can see trees and branches discharging out of the ink splatter which i think is such a cool idea i have never seen anything like it.for my photography response i used photoshop brushes to create the effect which is the difference from my work compared to the artists work.It was fun experimenting with this i used the whole image and brushed over with black color on but the artist used a white background which was one of the differences,I like how you can still see the image with mine i used the images i took that day but picking out the similarities of the artists work.I think the artist is trying to portray that their surrounding or home has been affected by oil spillage or changes to the environment possibly from pollution.I might use this technique in the future.I have learnt that painting can be a lot of fun especially with the help of photoshop, you can let loose and color outside the images their is no restriction.

Are each of your responses to the Silo visit about home? If so how do your images relate to the idea of home? No it doesnt relate to the theme HOME.

Or if not then what are the themes you are working with? I took interest with ink splatter on the artist images i used the ink splatter brush on photoshop to undergo this effect.

My response

Opinion:Genre:creative,fine art,landscape.
Another work i like i still havent found out the artists name but the orange just really stood out with the dark under exposed image next to it.I took this image of Nat using the rule of thirds i tried to place her in the centre of the.The artist used  landscape images which was different to mine i used an interior shot.I used photoshop to create the orange and under exposed image.I really enjoyed doing the whole process something different for me because normally i would play around with just the exposure and contrast leaving the color of the image neutral and just the orange tone on the image gives a different feel and look to the image.

Artists Ian Strange
Theme Exhibitions
Ian Strange: Burn series - SUBURBAN

Burn series is a part of a larger body of work entitled SUBURBAN. Over two years Strange worked with a film crew and volunteers in Ohio, Detroit, Alabama, New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire to create, photograph and film site specific interventions incorporating suburban homes. The recording of these interventions through photographic documentation forms the basis of this work.

The most dramatic of all his approaches, however, is the Burn Series in which, with the involvement of the fire department in Ohio, houses were set alight and burned to the ground in an act of symbolic requital; the surviving record of their existence being Strange’s art-directed photographic documentation.

Artists Arthur Ou
Theme Exhibitions
Artist's statement - "Through photography, one of the recent concerns in my practice deals with notions of the landscape as an artificial phenomenon. The urge to photograph the sea grew stronger after I relocated to NY from California some time ago, which also arise from the desire to picture an entity that I consider a connecting force between the two places — California and Taiwan — that I consider my "homelands." These photographs also extend to the interest in some of the specific sites where key modernist photographic works were made, though at the same time wanting to disrupt the clichéd beauty that comes from representing the sea. The black calligraphic areas in these seascapes are deliberate disruptions become decorative elements that directly obstruct an illusionistic view of the photographed scenes."

My opinion: ‘test screens’ series (photo-media) it seems fitting that the tri-fold meaning of this term would resonate in Arthur Ou’s work, which incorporates architecture and sculpture within the realm of photography. The artist manipulates the black and white film at negative stage with bleaching and masking techniques. After shooting the coastal locations for his Test Screen series, a bleach solution is applied to the black and white negative film. This removes the emulsion to form clear areas on the negative where the light goes through and which will appear as black in the finished print. In some works a stencil is prepared for the text or lines are masked out and bleach is applied through the mask for more defined edges. This is a subtractive process but these forms appear added or overlaid when printed.

my response

For my photography response i used photoshop brushes to create the splatter and lines over my images which is similar to the artists work.I couldnt find the artist but i have learnt For some of the artists, they never came from – they were always here.

Are each of your responses to the Silo visit about home? If so how do your images relate to the idea of home? Yes for this response i think it has a strong representation of the theme HOME because this was taken here in auckland.

Russ Flatt’s carefully staged photographs utilise different genres, modes and points of view in order to recover and reconstruct memories and past events.
His work addresses notions of identity by looking towards a re-imagined past in order to recognise the present.

Artists Shan Turner-Carroll
Theme Exhibitions
Inspired by the notion of an archetypal journey and the liminal space of transition, this body of work exists between the real and imagined. The photographs document both ritual and performance, creating representational symbols influenced by rites of passage. The costumes are made of both found and constructed materials. The traveling jacket is designed to be like a portable shelter. Symbolic gift sown onto the leaf material - work as talismans of protection, vertical gardens which provide food along the path, and a portable shrine to be accessed at any stage.

  2. Wow Pearllisa! You have produced some really interesting work for this response. Can you do some evaluation of your images? Did they work out as you'd hoped? What ideas does your work respond to? How is your work similar/different to the work of the artist you have responded to? What did you learn from the process and would you use it again in future work?

  3. Hi Pearllisa. Can you upload some of Sugimoto's architectural images to this post and maybe some more information about the project of his you mentioned? Are each of your responses to the Silo visit about home? If so how do your images relate to the idea of home? Or if not then what are the themes you are working with?
