WEEK2 CAMERA USE SHUTTER EXERCISES/CAMERA USE

                                          IN CLASS EXERCISE

    Panning Photos

Aperture:  f/22.0
Shutter:  1/40
ISO:  800
Camera setting:  shutter priority (TV)
Quality setting: Raw/Jpeg(this is Jpeg easier to put up on blog)
Color Balance Adobe: RGB
Focus:Manual
White Balance:Auto

I used my canon rebel XS to photograph the beautiful Mona I chose this image because I can see Monas face and body are in focus but her surroundings are a little out of focus..I did not use the tripod because my camera kept sending out error messages on my camera screen. This was shot in almost 2 mins because I did not want my camera to go off again.I will use a tripod if shooting under 1/60 next time.Sorry Caroline :)

Aperture:  f/22.0
Shutter:  1/10
ISO:  800
Camera setting:  shutter priority (TV)
Quality setting: Raw/Jpeg(this is Jpeg easier to put up on blog)
Color Balance: Adobe RGB

I chose this panning photo because the image is out of focus and fully blurred Slow shutter speed was used thus capturing motion blur as the subject was moving and also a lot of exposure is shown here as we were shooting outside and exposed to a lot of light.I also did not use a tripod here as well thus the camera shake and blurriness and yes I will be using the tripod next time when im shooting under 1/60.But im really glad how the image turned out to be because as you can see I got to also capture Mata in the frame as well shes the one standing on the left clearly unaware I was taking pictures she is also blurred because of the slow shutter speed 1/10.

Slow Shutter and Fast shutter speed using Francesca Woodmans                                                                                      Photograph as an example

I used the Canon EOS 60D on loan from class with the 50mm focal lens trying to reenact one of Francesca Woodmans photograph to get the motion blur. This is taken on a fast shutter speed in this image the model Mona was spinning so I used the shutter speed 1/125 to freeze this movement.I photoshopped the right image just to get that black and white ethereal ghostly imagery Francesca Woodman is  famous for and added grain on the image to make it dusty because her images are shot in an old house.Mona is faced on her side in the frame placed to her right not looking at the camera.

Aperture:  f/4.5
Shutter:  1/250
ISO:  800
Camera setting:  shutter priority (TV)
Quality setting: Raw/Jpeg(this is Jpeg easier to put up on blog)
Color Balance: Adobe RGB

Slow shutter speed

This is an example of an image shot in a slow shutter speed the models face blurred.Because the model was spinning, I used a shutter speed of 1/10 of a sec. This photo is supposed to be an abstract photo, or motion blur.

Aperture:  f/22
Shutter:  1/10
ISO:  800
Camera setting:  shutter priority (TV)
Quality setting: Raw/Jpeg(this is Jpeg easier to put up on blog)

Richard Avedons Diptych of Francis Bacon

This was taken using a medium shutter speed the subject was standing still to emulate Richard Avedon's diptych of Francis Bacon.

Here is my first attempt to emulate Richard Avedon's diptych of Francis Bacon I used photoshop to create this diptych of Mona.

Shooting a fast moving subject
I took a photograph of  a car at night this was shot at the lookout near the auckland airport with a canon EOS 60D with a slow shutter speed 1.3 sec i should have used a tripod,I placed the camera on a steady surface, you can still see a little bit of camera shake.
f/3.5, shutter 1.3 sec, ISO 500 18mm focal length

f/5.6, shutter 1.3 sec, ISO 1250 64mm focal length

Self directed Tasks:

This was also shot at night, location Mission bay.Using a tripod. The images below is an example of night photography with car light trails. The camera was a Canon 60D Digital SLR borrowed from class, set on shutter priority with a speed of 1.3 seconds. Before taking the photograph I focused on the night sky on the right upper corner. This set the aperture to f/5.6 which resulted in all the landscape being in sharp focus. ISO speed was kept to 1250 but i should have set my ISO lower to ensure the best quality with no grainy pixels.
f/36, shutter 30 sec, ISO 1250 135mm focal length

f/18, shutter 13 sec, ISO 2000, 24mm focal length

f/36, shutter 13sec, ISO 2000, 135mm focal length

I had to take series of portraits of someone standing still. This is my beautiful samoan friend her name is Josephine Tuma'i.I used my canon eos rebel xs.

Aperture:  f/18
Shutter:  1/100
ISO:  1600
Camera setting:  shutter priority (TV)
Quality setting: Raw/Jpeg(this is Jpeg easier to put up on blog)

The image is over exposed because of the slow shutter speed 1/10 sec.I should have decreased the ISO and used a tripod to capture this image.

I had to take series of photos of a moving object
This was during pasifika at the fiji village a dancer performing a traditional dance.

                                   f/10, shutter 1/250 sec, ISO 100, 96mm focal length

                                                 f/16, shutter 1/100sec, ISO 100, 96mm focal length

                                               f/18, shutter 1/60 sec, ISO 100, 96mm focal length
Shot at shutter priority shooting a fast moving subject from 1/60 below you can start to see the images getting blurred and in my case also camera because i did not use a tripod. The images will also start to get overexposed.

                                              f/18, shutter 1/30 sec, ISO 100, 96mm focal length

                                          f/29, shutter 2 sec, ISO 100, 96mm focal length
The image is over exposed because of the long shutter speed and too much light entering the lens.I should have decreased my aperture value to the lowest. The solution was to allow less light to make my picture. I say that rather than less light to get through the lens  the only remaining possibility was to further limit the light passing through the lens by a lower aperture value.

I had to take a photo in a darkened space using a shutter speed of 1 second or longer using a tripod to get someone to walk towards  the shot holding a lighter just to add a little flare lol.

Aperture:  f/14
Shutter:  1 sec
ISO:  200
Camera setting:  shutter priority (TV)
Quality setting: Raw/Jpeg(this is Jpeg easier to put up on blog)
Focal length:55mm
Focus:Manual
White Balance:Auto

Light drawing exercise using a tripod my camera was set to 2 seconds or higher.I used a torch from a mobile phone and a lighter.

f/22, shutter 8 sec, ISO 100,55mm focal length
I used a phone torch and a lighter. With one hand holding the phone torch and the other holding a lighter doing circular motion to get that spiral effect.

 f/22, shutter 8 sec, ISO 100 55mm focal length
I used a lighter to try and draw a flame using a lighter.

  f/22.0, shutter 8 sec, ISO 100 55mm focal length
I used both phone torch and a lighter.

                                                       f/22, shutter 25 sec, ISO 6400, 18mm focal length

                                         f/13, shutter 25 sec, ISO 100 18mm focal length

 f/22, shutter 25 sec, ISO 100 55mm focal length

The below images of the auckland sky tower was shot at night at mission bay using a long shutter speed.

f/29, shutter 30 sec, ISO 1250 135mm focal length

f/25, shutter 15 sec, ISO 2000, 75mm focal length

 f/4.5 shutter 1.3 sec, ISO 400, 18mm focal length

I am really happy how the images turned out because I have learnt how important the shutter priority ISO and aperture can manipulate a picture. The difference in real time between 1/500 of a second and 1/3 of a second may not seem long, but when measured in photographic time, it’s an eternity. It means the difference between freezing the motion of someone walking or getting a blur. It means the difference between getting a sharp or blurry image that’s hand held or using a tripod.
